1/20/2019 - 2019 NFL Playoffs - Conference Championship Preview

Conference Championship Games

This is historically always the best weekend in football and we have the four best teams in the league going at it.  From a fantasy perspective we have the option of a two game slate or a single game showdown slate for each game.  Both types are going to require you to differentiate from the popular plays and find those low owned players that can go off and win you a GPP.  Both games are predicted to be close high scoring games.  We will briefly look at both of them and give you some key plays/values that could break the slate.

Los Angeles Rams @ New Orleans Saints (-3.5) 56.5 O/U
New England Patriots @ Kansas City Chiefs (-3) 56 O/U

Two game slate (FD)

Instead of going into analysis mode, let's go right into build a lineup mode.  As we said before on these small slates, you gotta switch it up and zig when others zag. Our 2 game slate lineup will be on Fanduel and the single game lineups will refer to DraftKings.

QB Jared Goff ($8100): I'll take the cheapest quarterback even though there isn't much difference salary wise between all four.  Goff goes against a below average Saints pass defense, and could be the best value play at the position getting you the most fantasy points per $1K.

RB Todd Gurley ($8500):  One of the ways to be different on a short slate is to pair up a QB and RB, so taking Gurley here gets that done.  He also may go slightly overlooked with people thinking CJ Anderson will take away from his ceiling.  I'm not buying it.

RB Alvin Kamara ($8100)/RB James White ($7700):  I prefer Kamara but if you need to save a few hundred bucks I don't think James White's production will be too far off.  He seems to be Mr. Playoffs and the Patriots should have to pass more against KC.  Kamara crushed the Rams last time he played them and this time should be no different.

WR Ted Ginn ($5300)/ WR Tyreek Hill ($8400)/ WR Brandin Cooks ($6900):  I'll take all of these big play threats with homerun potential at the receiver position.  This play could be boom or bust for sure but we will hope for the boom and some big plays downfield!

TE Josh Hill ($4600):  I'm not quite sure how his ownership is going to be now that Ben Watson is out.  Given that he is really cheap, I would say probably at least 20-25%.  This is strictly a money saver as Kelce is clearly the top TE on the board, but we have to fade studs somewhere.

DEF: Pick your poison.  I don't like any of them but would favor the home teams over the visitors.

FLEX:  This build will leave you with plenty of options at the Flex spot.  Rex Burkhead at $5500 is intriguing and will probably have sub 10% ownership.  You could also go Sammy Watkins or Rob Gronkowski at $5600.  If you really wanna differentiate and leave some money on the table then throw in Chris Hogan.  My preference would be in the order they are listed here.

Single Game Slates (DK)

LOS @ NO:  These builds should generally follow our thinking above, so with that said I will have Gurley at my MVP slot.  Pair him up with Goff, and run it back with Kamara.  Same three players we started our single game build with.  If you want the homerun potential like we eluded to earlier, you can fit in Cooks and Ginn Jr.  That leaves you with $4000 to plug in a kicker or longshot WR.  Look out for Dan Arnold on the single game.  He could be active with Watson out, and may be worth a low-owned flyer.

NE @ KC:  There are so many playmakers on these two teams, the single game build is tough.  It's also going to be tough to differentiate.  I'll assume everyone will flock to KC for the MVP slot, so I'll go to the New England side and run with James White there.  Mahomes is a must for me and I think pairing him up with the big play potential of Hill is the way to go.  Pairing up both Pats running backs may help differentiate a little, so give me Sony Michel.  While it's not the ideal build to have a defense vs. your offensive players, you sometimes can't help it in single game lineups.  While I don't prefer a defense, KC defense could be sneaky with the potential of a return TD from Hill to double up on TD points.  That leaves $6000 for your pick of the litter.  Well no studs to choose from but plenty of value in that price range with Gronkowski, Watkins, or Burkhead.
